The times have changed dramatically from when I first had a thought about writing and publishing back in the 1980's. I remember spending forever writing what was to become my first finished novel, and then forever again to revise and re-revise over the course of a year to get it to the point where I felt it presentable enough to send out into the world of publishing.
Since I did not keep a record back then, I can only guess that I remember sending it to at least 3 dozen agents, and perhaps a handful of smaller publishers. I did not expect a quick answer. I knew that it could be weeks and even several month's before I'd hear anything yay or nay. I waited the appropriate amount of time before sending any follow ups. In the end, I received one hand written reply from an agent who told me my story was good, but it just wasn't what she was looking for. Besides a handful of form rejections, there was a whole lot of nothing. All that work which I'd hoped would be a benefit to myself of course, but also to a publisher with whom I would work with, was more or less ignored.
This is why I find it hard to feel sorry when I hear about the "big houses" losing profits, and having to chase down successful Indie authors for book deals. I'm sure Amanda Hocking and others have good reason to accept offers from the very people that looked down on them and would not even reply to queries two years ago, but.......
I am still planning to get a professional edit done, and self publish my book when complete. I know if I can manage to promote enough and get the word out, it will be a big success. What would I do if a large publisher approached me after I've sold a large number of books and wanted to represent me? I might want to ignore them so they know how it feels. In reality, I guess it depends on how much money I've made, and whether I'd want to share the profits of my work in exchange for the bigger 'reach' that a big publisher could offer, and if I could put the 1980's out of mind once and for all.

Wow, been away from here too long dealing with writers block, work, work, and more work. Got to figure out how to eliminate the work aspect entirely! Anyway, work is eliminated this week due to the fact that I am on vacation. This will be a stay at home type of vacation which is what I seriously need to get the business of writing fired up again. Who knows, maybe one of those lotto tickets I bought will bring the change to our lives that we dream of. A move out of the city. A nice piece of land, and a nice home out in the Texas Hill Country where unlimited writing time, and maybe some vegetable gardening will be the order of the day!

Mother's Day 2012

First off, a very happy Mother's Day! Once again, another weekend has flew by. Unfortunately, not a lot of writing progress this weekend. If things continue like this, I may have to revise my hoped for date of completion from mid to late summer, to fall. That particular date is when I would have the book complete and edited to the best of my ability and ready to have professionally edited.
Seriously need to get re-focused on the task at hand!

Saturday, May 5, 2012

Well, good old writers block has hit me this weekend - which is my prime writing time since I work a regular job Monday--Friday. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day. Since I have not been here glued to the laptop, at least I was able to get some overdue chores done around here today.

So glad the week is over since it was a hectic one at work. Hopefully I can get focused on writing again, but there's a new distraction to deal with: the NHL playoffs! Being a writer that is trying hard to get published and a die hard hockey fan at the same time presents problems.

Sad news yesterday on the passing of Dick Clark. I got a text alert yesterday with the news and told my young co-worker who had never heard of Dick. Reminded me that I've been around a while. I remember the old Bandstand show and of course the $25.000 pyramid game show. Really sad to see an icon like him go.

Well, another work week is over and it is time to write. Got a few chores to take care of in the morning, but hopefully ready by lunchtime. So many details waiting to hit the keyboard! Still hoping to get this thing professionally edited by mid summer.

Over the hump and halfway to the weekend. While I don't have much time to write during the week, I have been jotting down ideas that come to mind regarding the events to come in my project. I used to think I could remember things for a couple of days without making notes, but many an idea has been lost that way.

Sunday, April 8, 2012

Hope everyone is happy Easter. Been trying to make progress writing, but there's been a few distractions today. At least it's been a relaxing day thusfar. Dreading the thought of going back to the office tomorrow, but there's another weekend just a few days off. As for my project, I guess I am about a third of the way through the first draft. Hopefully I will reach my goal of being ready for a professional edit by mid - late summer. Still a long road ahead.

Thursday, April 5, 2012

Well, here we are knocking at the door of a wonderful three day weekend where writing will hopefully be the priority. I can see the day when writing will be my "job" and going to the office every day will be a thing of the past. As I said, I can see it, now I just have to get there!

Sunday, April 1, 2012

For once, it was a good weekend of writing. Now its back to the office job for the next four days. At least there is a three day weekend to look forward to.

Tuesday, March 27, 2012

Well, getting close to midweek and looking forward to some serious writing time this weekend. Had a great revelation today regarding a problem in my story and can't wait to get back to it.

Saturday, March 24, 2012

Another day half gone and not much done in the important area of writing. The distractions come from every angle. Once again it's a beautiful day outside. There's the Twitter thing we all love to play with, and Saturday is my day to pay the bills that arrived in my inbox during the past week. Some reading would be nice, but maybe another day!
Good morning. Time for coffee. Hoping for a productive literary day today!

Friday, March 23, 2012

Woke up this morning determined to get some quality writing done. Too many distractions today prevented that from happening:(
Does anyone else have a problem with time? I've been home from work for 2 weeks taking care of my wife who was in a car accident a couple of weeks ago. Along with being a full time nurse, it has allowed me to work on some writing related projects. Not sure if I'll have the time to do much with the copywriting course mentioned previously since I plan on returning to work next week. Guess I'll use the limited time I have working on my novel - which has a LONG way to go.
